Premier Asset Management is an investment company based in Guildford. It has grown rapidly over the past decade through the acquisition of funds and managers from other companies and now runs a wide variety of products. Using active management, its fund managers are given the freedom to implement their own philosophy on funds.

Alex Ross joined Premier in 2005 from Aberdeen Asset Management, where he had managed their highly successful Property Share Fund. He has over fifteen years experience in managing real estate securities.

The Investment Process

The fund’s universe is the approximately 150 property stocks listed in the UK and Europe, spread across a diverse number of geographic regions and real estate sub-sectors. The investment selection and portfolio construction is based on individual stock fundamentals rather than benchmark index weighting, although due consideration on portfolio construction is given to ensure adequate liquidity is maintained.

Risk

The fund is totally unconstrained by any benchmark so there are no controls on sector or stock weights. As such, the risk in the fund is simply whether or not the stocks in the fund might fall and by how much.

Our Opinion

Alex Ross is incredibly knowledgeable about his sector but it is important to note that this is a single sector fund investing in shares. As such, it may at times be influenced by trends in Europe’s property markets but when the chips are down it is still an equity fund with the associated risks.
